Msgr Mike's Blog | Tastes of the Spirit
This past Sunday’s celebration of the Feast of Pentecost marked the culmination and conclusion of another Easter season. As we celebrated the birth of the Church we were reminded again that the gift of the Holy Spirit has also been given to us. As on that very first Pentecost the Holy Spirit continues to empower, guide and unite the disciples of Jesus Christ. In a world and nation so divided and polarized we look for and celebrate experiences where unity, friendship and love bring us together. These become for us true modern day signs of the Holy Spirit still present and active in our world.
The 11:00 am Mass brought together parishioners from ten different countries in their native dress for an offertory procession which highlighted the beauty of diversity in the one faith we share. We had another overflow crowd the night before at the annual Taste of the Nations which gathered together many cultures sharing food, music and a festive spirit. Earlier that afternoon a bride and groom who both grew up in our parish exchanged vows and were united in marriage. Eighth grade graduation from St. Mary School took place earlier in the week as 28 students marked the end of their elementary school years. And of course, we had our annual Field Day with spirited St. Mary children cheering each other on in a loud chorus that nearly drowned out the music of the ice cream truck arriving.
So many signs of the unity that comes from the Holy Spirit. And all within the same week. May we never underestimate the power that God’s Holy Spirit continues to have in our lives.
